Hi! I’m Haleigh. Welcome to my Master of Nursing electronic portfolio. This e-portfolio will chronicle my journey through the Master of Nursing (MN) program at Athabasca University. If you’ve found your way to this page, it is likely you’re on this journey with me. Whether it’s as a professor, classmate, or colleague, I’m glad you’re here.
In my day-to-day life, I hold many titles including nurse, daughter, sister, auntie, wife and dog-mama. As the oldest of four children, I’ve been a caregiver most of my life. Prior to becoming a nurse I completed a Health Sciences degree at the University of Western Ontario with a focus on Rehabilitation Science. In 2014, I graduated from the Nipissing University compressed Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program. Since then, I’ve spent my career as a pediatric nurse caring for children and their families at three different tertiary pediatric hospitals. I’ve worked as a bedside nurse in the Emergency Department, Pediatric ICU, Neonatal ICU, inpatient Neurosurgery & Trauma wards and been a member of surgical inpatient and critical care nursing resource teams.
Currently, I am the Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) supporting the Cardiology, Complex Pain and Surgical Ambulatory clinics at BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH) in Vancouver, BC. As a CNE, my job is to promote excellence in clinical practice by developing & delivering learning modalities and educational materials that promote evidence-based practice. This means reaching bedside staff with the information, guidance and support they need to navigate the ever-changing world of nursing practice to provide the best care possible to the patients and families of BC and the Yukon.
BC Children’s Hospital is part of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) and resides on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the Coast Salish Peoples. Our work at BCCH is guided by six Coast Salish Teachings. You can learn more about the teachings which were gifted to PHSA, here. I feel incredibly grateful to both live and work on these lands which the Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island have stewarded since time immemorial and endeavour to reflect in appreciation daily.
I am passionate about improving care provision and have worked on many change projects over the last decade. Most recently, I was part of the team that led BC Children’s Hospital and the NICU at BC Women’s Hospital to achieve certification as a ChildKind Hospital in January of 2023. I have a special interest in adult learning and pediatric pain management & comfort. I am excited to get to know each of you as we learn with and from each other over the course of our MN program.
